1st Light Art Expedition Antarctica – 2003 UN Year of the water

This is the first piece of artwork that Gerry Hofstetter created when he began his Light Art Expeditions.

Projecting a polar bear, which lives in the north in the Arctic, onto an iceberg in the south in the Antarctic, home to penguins, is striking. This projection took place in March 2003 for the United Nations' International Year of the water. That same year, the ozone hole expanded to its greatest extent over the planet. This occurred over the Antarctic.

The message which Gerry created for this climate project was: If a polar bear sees a penguin in the wild for the first time, our blue planet will be lost, along with all living creatures and plants. The polar bear lives approximately 19,000 kilometres / 12’000 miles away from the penguin. Gerry hopes that his Fata Morgana projection will remain just that and will never become reality.
Light is hope.
