FATA TITANIC

example 1Instagram logo 400x400

Titanic projected in the original size of 269 m onto a giant iceberg for the 100 years emorial on the exact time when the tragedy happened 100 years ago.

The ship appeared on the giant iceberg on 14th April 2012 at 23.45h. Projection was realised on the West Coast of Greenland at the place where the iceberg originated (was born) and hit the Titanic (it sunk) after swimming 3’000 km South.

The intention behind this artwork was Gerry's vision to take the Titanic out of its grave through light and bring this legendary ship 3’000 km North to the birthplace of the iceberg for a reconciliation between the two after 100 years during Memorial Day. To achieve this, the Titanic had to be displayed at its original size on the iceberg to create the real scenario with all its elements, including the time of the start of the tragedy, 23:45h.

It took Gerry Hofstetter two light art expedition between 2006 and 2012 to the Arctic to train this vision to be sure, it will work 2012 on the exact time.

Special note: Shortly before the end of the projections at around 1:00 a.m., it began to snow and the ebb tide pulled the icebergs toward the boats from which Gerry and his team were carrying out their mission. They attempted to escape. In the middle of the night, in a snowstorm and with zero visibility, they tried to avoid the icebergs in order to reach the open sea. It was their fate that at 1:32 a.m., traveling at walking pace and with zero visibility, they crashed head-on into an iceberg. The Titanic sunk 100 years ago ag 02:20 a.m.. There was a large hole in the boat, 1 m above the waterline. After 4h sailing, they arrived back in the harbour. They were lucky.
